Connecting from Košice: Vienna Has 14 Flights a Week, Zurich Four

When you plan a connection from Košice, most people compare fares. Something else matters more: only Vienna has a morning departure (05:25), and only Vienna has a second rotation the same day (14:45). Flights to Warsaw and Zurich leave Košice around midday or in the afternoon, and only on certain days. The difference between the hubs is not the price but how many safety nets you have when something goes wrong.

Three hubs, three different characters

There are three network hubs you can connect through from Košice, and all three airlines are Star Alliance members. The routes run year-round and are sold as connected flights on a single booking.

  • Vienna (VIE), Austrian Airlines: 14 departures a week, meaning two a day, every day. OS 654 departs at 05:25 and OS 652 at 14:45. The flight takes roughly an hour.
  • Warsaw (WAW Chopin), LOT: roughly 5 to 6 departures a week, not daily. Departures fall between 12:30 and 17:40 (LO 510 and LO 512). The flight takes roughly an hour.
  • Zurich (ZRH), Swiss: 4 departures a week: Monday 19:40, Wednesday 14:50, Friday 10:00 and Saturday 09:55.

You can find the current overview in the flight schedule, and check a specific day under arrivals and departures.

Why a morning departure matters more than it seems

A morning flight from Košice gives you the whole day to continue. If your trip consists of two or three legs, 05:25 from Košice is often the only way to arrive the same day. The price is an early alarm: you will need to be at the airport very early, so plan your transport and parking in advance.

That is not possible with Warsaw and Zurich. The first Warsaw departure is no earlier than 12:30, and Zurich flies on Monday only at 19:40 and on other days between 09:55 and 14:50. For a long-haul trip this often means an overnight stay at the hub or continuing the next day. It is not a drawback in itself, but you need to factor it in from the start.

The second rotation as a safety net

Vienna is the only one of the three with a second flight on the same day. If anything goes wrong in the morning, such as a delay, a technical problem or a cancellation, you can try the afternoon flight at 14:45. With Warsaw and Zurich the next flight is usually several days away, because they do not operate daily. If you miss or lose your departure from Košice, the replacement may be far off.

So for trips with a fixed deadline, such as a conference, a wedding, boarding a cruise or an important meeting, favor the hub with two daily rotations, or plan a full spare day.

Who each hub suits

  • Vienna: for those who need flexibility, an early departure or a backup flight. It is the simplest choice for both regular and time-sensitive trips.
  • Warsaw: for those who like a midday departure and are heading to Central and Eastern Europe or beyond via the LOT network. Check which days it actually operates when planning.
  • Zurich: for trips where your day and time are firmly set, such as the Friday or Saturday morning departure. Four flights a week leave little room to change plans.

Your final destination often matters more than the hub itself. See the overview of destinations to find out which are easy to chain.

What to do if you miss a connection

With network carriers the situation is clearer than it seems. What matters most is whether you hold one booking or two. With connected flights on a single booking, the airline normally looks after you after a missed connection and rebooks you on the next suitable flight. If you bought the flights separately, you are on your own.

This matters especially with low-cost carriers. Ryanair and Wizz Air do not sell connections from Košice; their routes are always separate bookings, so do not build a long-haul connection on them.

In practice: if you see a delay, go to the airline desk at the hub or open its app before a queue forms. Keep your booking documents with you and save receipts for expenses. More answers are in the FAQ.

Current state of the schedule

As of 2 October 2026, the full Košice winter schedule 2026/2027 for Austrian Airlines, LOT and Swiss has not yet been confirmed; only Ryanair is confirmed so far. All three routes are year-round, but exact days and times may change with the winter switch. Always check the current status with the airline before buying a ticket.
