Connecting Flights from Košice: Fly Anywhere

Today, Košice offers direct flights to more than a dozen European cities – but thanks to connecting flights, you can reach virtually anywhere in the world from here. The key is choosing the right hub and understanding how transfers work: when a single ticket protects you, when you need to collect your own baggage, and how much time to allow for a connection. This article sums up which hubs are worth flying through from Košice and what to watch out for.

Why fly from Košice via a hub

The summer flight schedule for 2026 brought Košice Airport a record 12 scheduled routes. Alongside popular low-cost connections to Prague, London and Dublin, three full-service network carriers also operate here, linking passengers to their global hubs. It’s through these connections that travellers from eastern Slovakia can reach destinations a direct flight from Košice will never cover – from North America to the Middle East and Asia. What’s more, a connecting flight often works out cheaper than looking for a direct flight from Bratislava or Vienna, since the whole journey starts right at home, without having to travel to another airport.

Three main hubs from Košice: Vienna, Warsaw, Zurich

Košice has regular connections to three major European hubs via network carriers:

Vienna (Austrian Airlines) – 13 flights a week, mostly on Embraer E195 aircraft. Via Schwechat you can connect to dozens of Austrian Airlines and Star Alliance partner routes across Europe, North America and the Middle East.
Warsaw (LOT Polish Airlines) – 6 flights a week. Chopin Airport is a hub with an extensive LOT network to the USA, Canada and Asia, particularly popular for transatlantic flights.
Zurich (Swiss) – 4 flights a week. From there you can easily connect to destinations such as San Francisco, New York, Bangkok, Hong Kong or Johannesburg.

Low-cost connections and self-transfer

Alongside the network carriers, the range of low-cost routes from Košice is also growing. Ryanair launched a new route to Málaga, Spain (2x a week) on 30 March 2026, and continues to fly to Prague, London Stansted, Dublin, Liverpool and Zadar. Wizz Air opened a route to Rome Fiumicino (2x a week) on 31 March 2026, and from 25 June 2026 also the long-awaited route to Cologne, alongside its regular flights to London Luton and the domestic route to Bratislava.

These routes operate as separate, point-to-point flights – low-cost carriers typically don’t offer through-check-in on a single ticket or baggage transfer to the final destination. If you want to continue from Prague, London or Rome on a different flight, that’s known as a self-transfer: you buy two separate tickets, collect your baggage after landing, check in again from scratch, and take responsibility for making your connecting flight yourself. In this case, if your first flight is delayed, the carrier is not liable for you missing the second one.

Single ticket vs. separate tickets

The biggest difference between a “single ticket” transfer and a self-transfer is the level of protection you have:

Single ticket (through-check-in) – you check your baggage in Košice straight through to the final destination, you receive boarding passes for both legs at once, and if the first flight is delayed, the carrier will rebook you onto the next available connection. EU Regulation 261/2004 also applies here: if the delay is caused by the carrier and both flights are part of a single booking, you may be entitled to compensation for the resulting delay at your final destination.
Separate tickets – cheaper and more flexible when combining different carriers, but with no guarantee of a connection. If you miss your connection, you have to sort it out yourself, potentially through travel insurance.

The rule is simple: if you’re transferring via Vienna, Warsaw or Zurich with a network carrier, it’s worth buying a single ticket for the whole route. When combining low-cost flights, consider building in a longer time buffer or planning an overnight stay instead.

Minimum connection time and baggage

Every airport has its own minimum connection time (MCT), which only applies to flights booked on a single ticket:

Vienna – typically around 30 to 60 minutes depending on the type of connection (domestic, Schengen, non-Schengen). If your baggage isn’t checked through to the final destination, you’ll need to leave the departure zone during transit, collect it and check it in again.
Warsaw – the official minimum time is around 30 to 40 minutes; in practice, if boarding is by bus or the flight is outside the Schengen area, it’s advisable to allow extra time.

For separate tickets (self-transfer), we recommend leaving at least 90 to 150 minutes between flights, since getting through customs and passport control, collecting baggage and checking in again takes considerably longer than a transfer within the transit zone. Practical tips for your journey

Book a single-ticket transfer whenever possible – it saves you both hassle and potential extra costs.
For a self-transfer, plan a sufficient time buffer and keep a copy of both bookings with you.
Arrive for departures from Košice at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure, and earlier still for long-haul routes via a hub.
