Vienna

Description of the destination

Vienna, the capital of Austria, is one of Europe’s most beautiful historic and cultural cities, famous for its imperial architecture, musical heritage and coffee-house culture.

What to see in Vienna

  • Hofburg – the former imperial palace, a vast complex of palaces and museums that also houses the Spanish Riding School with its Lipizzaner horses.
  • Belvedere – the Baroque palace built for Prince Eugene of Savoy, with formal gardens and a collection that includes Klimt’s The Kiss.
  • Vienna State Opera – one of the world’s great opera houses, with performances almost every night of the season.
  • St Stephen’s Cathedral – the Gothic symbol of Vienna; its south tower offers a fine view over the city.
  • Prater – a large park and amusement area best known for its giant Ferris wheel, popular for walks and cycling.
  • Albertina – a palace museum with one of the largest graphic art collections in the world.
  • City Hall (Rathaus) – a striking neo-Gothic building whose square hosts one of the city’s best-known Christmas markets.
  • Schönbrunn Palace – the imperial summer residence with extensive gardens and the world’s oldest zoo, one of Austria’s most important historic sites.

Flights from Košice to Vienna

The Košice–Vienna route is operated by Austrian Airlines, which resumed the connection and flies it year-round, usually several times a week with extra departures on the main working days. Vienna is the airline’s home hub, so from Košice you can connect to a wide network of European and long-haul flights – which makes the route especially popular with business travellers. Exact departure times are in the flight schedule and live status in arrivals and departures.

Practical information

  • From the airport to the centre: note a temporary change – from August 2026 until the end of October 2027 the City Airport Train (CAT) does not run on rails. During the reconstruction of Vienna’s main line it is replaced by air-conditioned buses between Vienna-Schwechat Airport and Wien Mitte, with a journey time of about 21 minutes and several departures an hour. Regular S7 and Railjet trains are much cheaper, but from September 2026 they are also affected by engineering works, so check your connection shortly before travelling.
  • Best time to visit: April to June and September to October, when the weather is pleasant and there are fewer tourists. The Christmas markets from late November are a chapter of their own.
  • Getting around: Vienna’s U-Bahn, trams and buses are among the most reliable in Europe; a 24- or 48-hour ticket pays off.
  • Tip: most central sights are within walking distance of each other, but Schönbrunn and the Prater are easier to reach by U-Bahn.
