Zurich

What to See in Zurich

• Old Town (Altstadt) – a maze of medieval lanes on both banks of the river Limmat, dominated by the twin towers of the Grossmünster cathedral, the city’s landmark.
• Fraumünster – a church famous for its stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall, one of Switzerland’s most visited sights.
• Bahnhofstrasse – one of the world’s most famous shopping streets, running from the main station down to the lake.
• Lake Zurich – promenades, lake baths and scenic boat cruises.
• Kunsthaus – the country’s leading art gallery, with collections ranging from Monet to Giacometti.
• Uetliberg – Zurich’s local mountain with a panoramic view of the city, the lake and the Alps, reachable by train directly from the centre.

Practical Information
From Zurich Airport, trains take you to the city centre in around 10–15 minutes, running several times an hour. Public transport relies on reliable trams and S-Bahn suburban trains. Expect higher prices – a restaurant lunch costs noticeably more than at home; self-service bistros and supermarkets help you save. Zurich is also a great base for day trips: both the Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall, and picturesque Lucerne are less than an hour away by train.
