Only a handful of European cities are served by direct flights from Košice, and in winter there are even fewer than in summer. If your destination isn’t among them, almost every traveller in eastern Slovakia ends up asking the same question: is it worth driving to Budapest, Kraków or Rzeszów instead? What matters isn’t which airport is closest. What matters is how quickly you can actually get there, and what the whole trip costs beyond the ticket price.
Four airports worth considering
Four options make sense for a traveller from Košice. The home Košice Airport is fifteen minutes from the city centre. Across the border there’s Rzeszów-Jasionka and Kraków-Balice in Poland, and Budapest in Hungary. Bratislava and Vienna don’t belong in this comparison — from eastern Slovakia they’re too far away for a same-day drive to make sense.
By road the distances look like this: Rzeszów-Jasionka is roughly 210 to 225 kilometres away, Kraków about 250 kilometres, and Budapest Airport around 265 kilometres. Rzeszów is clearly the closest.
The closest airport isn’t the fastest one
And this is exactly where intuition fails. Although Budapest Airport is the furthest of the three, it’s the one you’ll reach the fastest. The route runs almost entirely along the R4 expressway and the Hungarian M30 and M3 motorways, so the drive from Košice to the terminal takes about two and a half hours. Getting to the closer Rzeszów, by contrast, takes over three hours, since the route mostly follows lower-class roads through the Dukla Pass. Kraków is similar, at roughly three and a half hours.
So the forty-plus-kilometre advantage Rzeszów has on paper turns, in practice, into nearly an hour’s advantage for Budapest. If you’re flying out early in the morning, that’s the difference between getting up at three or at two — or between needing an overnight stay and not.
Getting there without a car
Without a car the gap widens even further. A direct long-distance bus runs from Košice straight to Budapest Airport, stopping right in front of the terminal; the ride takes about three hours and there are several departures a day. To reach Kraków you take a bus or train into the city and then continue to the airport by train from the main station. To Rzeszów there’s no direct airport connection at all — once you arrive in the city you still need to change to a local bus line.
For Košice this part of the equation is trivial: a city bus, taxis and Bolt all serve the airport, and the ride from the centre takes a quarter of an hour. Details are available on the transport to the airport page.
What flies from Košice this winter season 2026/27
Before you start counting kilometres, it’s worth checking whether your destination is already covered by a direct flight from the home airport. Ryanair has announced its most extensive winter schedule for Košice yet: five routes and 13 percent more weekly flights than last year. Flights operate to Prague, London Stansted, Dublin, Liverpool, and — new this winter — Malaga, offered from Košice for the first time in the cold season. According to the published schedule, that’s Prague five times a week, London four to five times, Liverpool three times, and Dublin and Malaga twice a week each. More on the carrier is available on the Ryanair from Košice page.
On top of that, year-round network flights connect Košice with Vienna, Warsaw and Zurich, giving you a one-stop connection to virtually anywhere. The current overview of routes is always available in the flight schedule, and the list of cities is in the destinations section.
The hidden costs of chasing a cheaper ticket
A comparison that favours a foreign airport is usually based on ticket price alone. But the full equation also includes fuel both ways, the Hungarian electronic road toll or Polish tolls, and above all parking for the entire length of your trip. A week of parking at a foreign airport is a line item of its own, one worth comparing with what you’d pay at home — prices and zones near Košice are listed on the parking page.
Then add the time. Five to six extra hours of driving each way is negligible on a week-long holiday, but it eats up a substantial share of a long weekend. And finally there’s the risk: if your flight is cancelled or badly delayed, you’re dealing with it at an airport two hundred and fifty kilometres from home, with your car parked there and a drive back in the middle of the night ahead of you.
When it’s worth it — and when it isn’t
In simple terms, three rules apply. If there’s a direct flight from Košice to your destination, the home airport wins in most cases even at a somewhat higher ticket price — the time saved and the lack of hassle make up for it. If your destination has no direct flight from Košice, compare Budapest first, since it’s the most time-efficient option and the only one with a direct connection right to the terminal. And if you’ll need to change planes somewhere anyway, the choice of hub matters more than the choice of departure airport — what counts there is connection time and protection, not kilometres of motorway.
If you’re looking for specific dates, the promotional tickets overview can help too — when the price difference turns out smaller than expected, the decision usually gets made very quickly.
Summary
The closest foreign airport for eastern Slovakia is Rzeszów-Jasionka, but the fastest to reach is Budapest Airport, thanks to a near-continuous motorway route and a direct bus connection. Kraków is a compromise with the widest choice of routes. And Košice remains the number one choice whenever a direct flight covers your destination — in winter 2026/27 Ryanair offers five of them, plus three year-round network connections.
