Skip to content Cologne, Germany’s fourth-largest city, is a lively metropolis on the banks of the Rhine, combining two thousand years of history with a relaxed Rhineland atmosphere. Founded by the Romans, the city is today a hub of culture, trade fairs and media – and thanks to the new direct route, it is just a two-hour flight from Košice.
Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom): The monumental Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the city’s symbol. Its towers rise more than 150 metres, and the viewing platform offers a wonderful panorama of the city and the Rhine.
Museum Ludwig: Right next to the cathedral, this museum houses one of Europe’s most important collections of modern art, including works by Picasso and Andy Warhol.
Hohenzollern Bridge: The railway bridge across the Rhine, its railings covered with thousands of love locks, offers the most beautiful view of the cathedral.
Old Town (Altstadt): Colourful houses, cosy squares and traditional brewhouses serving the local Kölsch beer in its typical narrow glasses.
Chocolate Museum: A favourite stop for families with children, right on the banks of the Rhine – complete with a chocolate fountain and tastings.
Cologne/Bonn Airport lies about 15 kilometres from the city centre. The fastest way into town is by train directly from the terminal – the journey to the main station by the cathedral takes around 15 minutes. Cologne is a year-round destination: spring and summer invite riverside walks and Rhine cruises, February brings the famous carnival, and in December the Christmas markets beneath the cathedral rank among the finest in Germany. The city is also an ideal base for trips to Bonn, Düsseldorf or Aachen.
