Miles on flights from Košice: how to earn and use them

If you fly from Košice and collect loyalty miles, you don’t need to worry about which transfer hub earns you more points. All three network routes from Košice Airport (KSC) – to Vienna with Austrian Airlines, to Warsaw with LOT Polish Airlines and to Zurich with SWISS – belong to the very same loyalty programme, Miles & More. Miles from any of these three routes land in the same account, so you can pick your hub based on the flight schedule, connection time or ticket price, rather than on which one “collects” more points.

Three hubs, one loyalty programme

Three scheduled network routes operate out of Košice, each acting as a gateway to destinations worldwide: Vienna, Warsaw and Zurich. Exact departure times and connecting flights can be found in the flight schedule, and a full overview of destinations is available in the destinations section. What all three routes have in common is that Austrian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines and SWISS are all fully integrated partners of the Miles & More programme, run by the Lufthansa Group. LOT does not operate a separate loyalty scheme of its own – it uses Miles & More as well. All three carriers are also members of the Star Alliance.

Why you don’t need to pick a hub based on miles

Because Austrian, LOT and SWISS all belong to the same loyalty scheme, travellers from eastern Slovakia don’t need to agonise over which transfer point will “earn” them more points. Miles from flights via Vienna, Warsaw and Zurich are all credited to the same Miles & More account. That means the decision can focus on what actually affects comfort and cost – the specific departure and arrival times, the length of the connection, or the availability of an onward flight to the final destination. Up-to-date arrival and departure information for Košice is available in the arrivals and departures section.

Award miles and status miles – what’s the difference

Miles & More distinguishes between two types of miles. Award miles are the ones you can spend – for example on rewards or other programme benefits. Status miles, on the other hand, aren’t meant to be spent; instead, they determine your membership status within the programme. Status miles reset every year on 1 January, so reaching or maintaining a higher tier requires collecting enough status miles within that calendar year. They can only be earned on flights with fully integrated programme partners and Star Alliance members – which is exactly the case on flights from Košice via Vienna, Warsaw or Zurich.

When miles expire and how to avoid it

Award miles don’t last forever. They remain valid for 36 months from the date of the activity they were earned for – that is, from the start of the flight, stay or car rental. If they aren’t used within that period, they expire at the end of the relevant quarter. There are, however, two ways to avoid this:

  • by reaching one of the programme’s status tiers – Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle Member,
  • or by holding a Miles & More credit card – holding it for at least three months with a minimum of one qualifying purchase per month is enough to make your miles valid indefinitely.

For frequent travellers from Košice who repeatedly use one of the three network hubs, this can be the difference between miles simply fading away over time and miles staying available for later use.

Ryanair and Wizz Air: a different model, no miles

Košice is also served by the low-cost carriers Ryanair and Wizz Air, which operate on a completely different basis. Ryanair’s routes from Košice include Prague, London Stansted, Liverpool, Dublin and Málaga, while Wizz Air flies to London Luton, Rome and Bratislava. Neither of these carriers awards loyalty miles – instead, they offer their own subscription and discount schemes, which work on a different principle than programmes like Miles & More. Anyone planning to fly with either of them should expect that no miles will be credited to their account. An overview of Ryanair’s routes and conditions from Košice is available in the Ryanair section.

Practical tips for travellers from Košice

If collecting miles is your main priority, it’s worth focusing on the overall quality of the connection – how well the flights line up, the length of the layover and the price – since the programme your miles are credited to is the same across all three network hubs from Košice. We regularly track good deals on both network and low-cost routes from Košice in our promotional tickets section.
