Wizz Air Connects Košice with Cologne: New Route for 2026

Eastern Slovakia has a new direct connection to Germany this summer. On 25 June 2026, Wizz Air launched its long-awaited route from Košice to Cologne, flying twice a week to Cologne/Bonn Airport, with the service set to continue into the winter schedule. It is great news for travellers from eastern Slovakia – whether you are heading to Germany for work, visiting family, or simply want to explore one of the country’s most famous cities without transfers and long journeys.

The new route at a glance

The Košice – Cologne route is operated by low-cost carrier Wizz Air with two flights per week. During the summer schedule, flights operate on Thursdays and Sundays; in the winter season they move to Mondays and Fridays. Košice has thus gained a direct link to another country, and Wizz Air has confirmed it is planning for the long term – the Cologne route is a year-round service, not just a seasonal novelty.

Under the summer schedule, the aircraft departs Košice at 6:00 a.m. and lands in Cologne at 8:00 a.m. local time. The return flight leaves Cologne at 8:30 a.m. and arrives in Košice at 10:30 a.m. The morning times are practical – you are in Cologne before the working day begins, with the whole day ahead of you. Why Cologne?

With over a million inhabitants, Cologne is Germany’s fourth-largest city and a major economic hub of North Rhine-Westphalia. The region is also home to a sizeable Slovak community, so the route will please not only tourists but also those travelling for family or work. Cologne is a major trade fair city too – the Koelnmesse exhibition centre hosts dozens of international events every year, from the Gamescom gaming festival to the Anuga food fair.

The city’s location is another advantage. Cologne lies in the heart of the Rhineland, close to Bonn and Düsseldorf, and thanks to Germany’s dense rail network you can comfortably reach all of western Germany as well as neighbouring Belgium and the Netherlands.

What to see in Cologne: the cathedral, the Rhine and world-class museums

The city’s symbol is the monumental Gothic cathedral, the Kölner Dom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its two towers rise more than 150 metres, and climbing to the viewing platform is one of the city’s most popular experiences. Right next to the cathedral you will find Museum Ludwig, home to one of Europe’s most important collections of modern art, and a few steps further the Hohenzollern Bridge, its railings covered with thousands of love locks.

A stroll through the historic Old Town is also worthwhile, with its colourful houses and traditional brewhouses serving the local Kölsch beer. Shoppers will enjoy the busy Schildergasse shopping street, and in spring and summer you can take a boat cruise on the Rhine. And if the city’s name rings a bell – yes, this is where the famous eau de Cologne was born.

Practical tips for travellers

Cologne/Bonn Airport lies about 15 kilometres south-east of the city centre. The most convenient way into town is by train – the station is directly beneath the terminal and the journey to the main station by the cathedral takes roughly 15 minutes. Wizz Air’s basic fare includes only a small carry-on bag; larger luggage must be purchased separately, so read the carrier’s rules before you travel and consider what you really need.

A record summer for Košice

Cologne is not the only novelty this year. Since the end of March 2026, Wizz Air has also been flying from Košice to Rome – twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Ryanair, meanwhile, launched a year-round route to Málaga in Spain at the end of March, with flights on Mondays and Thursdays – historically the first direct connection between Košice and Spain. The domestic route to Bratislava is thriving as well, operating up to thirteen times a week since March.

The results speak for themselves: in the first half of 2026, Košice Airport handled more than 461,000 passengers, a year-on-year increase of around 43 per cent. Absolutely. Cologne is an attractive city-break destination, a practical gateway to western Germany and, with its early-morning departure from Košice, a convenient option for business trips too.
