Travel Documents for Flights from Košice: A Complete Guide

While most passengers travelling from Košice focus on baggage and check-in, travel documents are often the part of trip preparation people only double-check at the airport – sometimes too late. A Slovak ID card with a photograph is sufficient for most trips around Europe, but there are several destinations you cannot fly to without a passport, and additional requirements are being added, such as the electronic travel authorisation for the United Kingdom. This guide summarises which document you need depending on your destination country, what applies to children, and what to watch out for just before departure.

When an ID card is enough

According to the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, a Slovak ID card with a photograph is valid as a travel document in all European Union member states, as well as in Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, Georgia, Moldova and Gibraltar. For passengers travelling from Košice, this means that for most regular routes – for example to Vienna with Austrian Airlines, to Zurich with SWISS, to Warsaw with LOT, to Bratislava, Rome or Prague with Wizz Air and Ryanair, or on a holiday flight to Zadar, which has been part of the Schengen area since 2023 – a valid ID card is sufficient.

There is one thing to watch out for: the ministry explicitly points out that some airlines may require a passport even where it is not needed for entry into the country itself. Always check the specific carrier’s conditions before buying a ticket, ideally while looking at the current flight schedule and the list of destinations from Košice Airport.

The United Kingdom and Ireland: two different rules

An ID card is not enough for the United Kingdom. On flights from Košice to London Stansted, London Luton and Liverpool with Ryanair and Wizz Air, you need a passport. In addition, Slovak citizens must obtain the UK ETA electronic travel authorisation, which has applied to citizens of all 27 EU member states since 2 April 2025. Ireland, on the other hand, is an example of a country where the situation is not entirely straightforward. Dublin, served from Košice by Ryanair, is an EU member state but is not part of the Schengen area. An ID card is sufficient for entry into Ireland, but a proper document check takes place at the border – so expect the border police to ask you to present your document on arrival, much as they would outside the Schengen area.

Children need their own document

A simple rule applies when travelling abroad: every child, including a newborn, must have their own travel document – it is not possible to travel entered in a parent’s document. Since December 2019, even a child can have an ID card with a photograph from birth. For children aged 6 to 15, the card is issued with a validity of 5 years, and the administrative fee is 7 euros.

For countries that do not recognise a Slovak ID card for entry – typically the United Kingdom, but also Turkey or Egypt – a child needs a passport, just like an adult. So if you are planning a family flight to London, for example, arrange your child’s passport and ETA before travelling, not at the last minute.

Passport validity by destination

Many countries outside the European Union require a passport to have a certain minimum remaining validity on the day of entry. If you are heading off on a charter holiday, for example to Turkey or Egypt, bear in mind that Egypt requires a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry and Turkey for at least 150 days from the date of entry. Check your document’s validity before buying a ticket – especially if you are watching for promotional tickets and booking at short notice. On seasonal charter flights with Smartwings to Greece, for example to Heraklion, Rhodes or Zakynthos, entry into the country is simpler since it is a Schengen destination, but it is still worth having a passport with a comfortable margin of validity.

EES and ETIAS: changes that do not directly affect Slovaks

A new system, EES (Entry/Exit System), has been rolled out at Schengen borders, replacing manual passport stamping, and has been fully operational since April 2026. It applies exclusively to third-country nationals – so it does not affect Slovaks flying from Košice with an ID card or a Slovak passport. It may, however, affect family members or fellow travellers who hold a third-country passport.

The situation is similar with the planned European travel authorisation ETIAS, which has been postponed repeatedly. In 2026, the European Union withdrew the originally announced deadline of end of 2026 and has not yet set a new fixed date – realistically, it is not expected before 2027. Moreover, ETIAS will not apply to EU citizens, including Slovaks, since it is intended for citizens of visa-exempt third countries travelling to the Schengen area.

Practical checklist before departure

Before travelling from Košice, check your documents against this simple checklist:

Check whether your destination is among the countries where an ID card is sufficient, or whether you need a passport.
Check the specific carrier’s conditions – Ryanair, Wizz Air and other airline partners may have stricter requirements than the state itself.
For flights to the United Kingdom, have your passport ready and your UK ETA arranged.
Arrange your child’s own document well in advance, and for travel outside the EU, opt for a passport rather than an ID card.
For destinations such as Turkey or Egypt, check your passport’s remaining validity against the required minimum number of months or days.
