Košice Airport has just closed the strongest six months in its history. Between January and June 2026 it handled more than 461,000 passengers, a 43 percent increase year on year. The half-million mark was passed in July – a full month earlier than last year. Here is what is driving the growth and what it means for travellers in eastern Slovakia.
A record first half in numbers
In 2024 the airport welcomed its 500,000th passenger on 25 August; in 2025 the date was 14 August. This year the milestone fell before the end of July. The jubilee passenger was Lýdia from Poprad, who flew with her family on a charter service to Larnaca in Cyprus.
The 43 percent jump is not a one-off. It continues a trend of several consecutive seasons in which demand for direct flights from Košice has grown faster than airlines have been able to add capacity.
June 2026 was the busiest month ever
June alone brought over 127,000 passengers, the highest monthly figure the airport has ever recorded, beating the previous record set last August. A charter season in full swing, a fully loaded summer timetable and two brand new routes all landed in the same month.

What is behind the growth: twelve scheduled routes
The summer 2026 timetable is the richest Košice has ever had – twelve scheduled routes and two completely new destinations. The full overview is on our flight schedule page.
- Rome Fiumicino – Wizz Air launched the route on 31 March with two weekly flights (Tuesday and Saturday). It is the first scheduled link between Košice and the Italian capital.
- Málaga – Ryanair opened the route on 30 March, flying twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. Andalusia is now reachable from Košice without a connection.
- Bratislava – the domestic Wizz Air route stepped up to 13 weekly flights from 21 March. Except on Wednesdays there is both a morning and an evening rotation, which makes same-day business trips realistic.
Add the stable year-round network: Ryanair serves Prague (daily), London Stansted, Liverpool, Dublin and seasonally Zadar; Wizz Air adds London Luton; Austrian Airlines flies to Vienna, LOT to Warsaw and SWISS to Zurich. Vienna and Warsaw remain the key hubs for long-haul connections.
Charter traffic is pushing the numbers up
A large share of the summer increase comes from charter flights to holiday destinations. In season, Košice offers departures to Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Cyprus and the Spanish islands. What the growth means in practice
More passengers means a busier terminal. A few tips that will save you time on peak days:
- Arrive early. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday mornings expect longer queues at check-in and security. Two hours before departure is a sensible minimum in summer, and more for flights outside the Schengen area.
- Book parking in advance. Capacity at the terminal car parks is limited in season. See the options on our airport parking page.
- Consider public transport. The airport is served by both bus and train from the centre of Košice, with timings adjusted to the flight schedule.
- Allow extra time for UK and Ireland flights. Journeys outside the Schengen area involve full passport checks, which lengthen the process.
The outlook for the rest of the year
If the pace holds, the airport is on track to beat last year’s annual total by a comfortable margin. The summer season usually peaks in August, followed by a slight slowdown, and at the end of October traffic switches to the winter timetable. That schedule is traditionally leaner – mainly the year-round routes to Vienna, Warsaw, Prague, London, Dublin, Liverpool, Zurich and Bratislava, complemented by winter holiday destinations.

How to save money as demand grows
Record load factors have a downside: the busier a route, the faster fares climb in the final weeks before departure. A few proven rules:
- Book well ahead. On seasonal routes such as Zadar or Málaga the best dates are usually taken months in advance.
- Be flexible with days. Midweek departures are generally cheaper than Friday and Sunday ones.
- Budget for baggage. Low-cost carriers include only a small personal item in the base fare; cabin trolleys and hold bags cost extra and are most expensive when bought at the airport.
- Compare Košice with Vienna or Kraków. Once ground transport, parking and time are counted in, a direct flight from Košice often works out better than it first appears.
