How to Get to Košice Airport from Eastern Slovakia

Are you flying out of Košice International Airport and live in Prešov, Michalovce or Humenné? Good news: you can reach the terminal comfortably and predictably even without your own car. The most reliable route is usually a combination of a train or bus into Košice, followed by local public transport straight to the airport. This article gives you a clear guide for all three directions, plus tips on parking, taxis and Bolt.

From Prešov by train and local transport

From Prešov, the connection to Košice Airport is one of the simplest in the region. Trains on the Prešov–Košice line run all day at a regular hourly interval, and the journey takes approximately 36 to 37 minutes. On weekdays they are supplemented by faster REX category trains, so the interval between connections is denser and you can better fit the journey around your flight. Check exact departure times before you travel on the ZSSK website.

Once you arrive at the main railway station in Košice, there’s no need to cross the city — local transport line 23 runs directly from Staničné námestie to the airport, all day long. It’s the cheapest and most time-predictable way to reach the terminal without having to plan for parking or a taxi. You’ll find a detailed overview of all transport options to the airport on our transport to the airport page.

For line 23, choose the ticket type based on your journey length and amount of luggage:

  • 60-minute ticket: €1.40 (discounted €0.70)
  • 30-minute ticket: €1.20
  • luggage ticket: €1.20
  • SMS ticket: €1.50 (send an SMS to number 1166)

To be safe, buy your ticket or order it by SMS before boarding, so nothing delays you on the way to the airport.

From Michalovce and Humenné

From Michalovce you can reach Košice either by train, which takes approximately 1 hour 10 to 20 minutes, or by bus, with a journey time of around 1 hour 15 minutes. Bus connections run almost every hour on weekdays, so you can fit your journey fairly flexibly around your departure time. Once you arrive at the Košice main railway station or bus station, you continue just like passengers from Prešov — on local transport line 23 straight to the airport.

Passengers travelling from Humenné should pay extra attention to the current state of the line. Electrification work is currently underway on the Košice–Humenné line, and on the section between Michalovce and Strážske there is a replacement bus service in place. For this reason, always check your connection shortly before travelling on cp.sk, so you don’t count on a train that isn’t currently running according to the standard timetable. Afterwards, also check the current schedule on our flight schedule page, so you can plan your transport to the airport with enough of a buffer.

By car and parking

If you’re travelling from Prešov by car, the fastest route to Košice is the D1 motorway. From both Michalovce and Humenné, regular roads lead to Košice, which are a good alternative given the shorter distance, especially if you’re travelling with a lot of luggage or in a larger group, where a train or bus ticket would work out more expensive.

Paid parking is available directly at the Košice Airport terminal, so you can drive right up to the departures hall. If you’re planning to leave your car at the airport for a longer period, it’s worth checking the conditions and types of parking in advance on our parking page, so you know what to expect.

If you’re not sure which mode of transport to choose, consider the number of travellers, the amount of luggage and your flight time — the combination of train and local transport line 23 is generally the most convenient for individuals without much luggage, while families or groups with suitcases often appreciate the comfort of a car or taxi straight to the terminal.

Taxi and Bolt

For passengers who prefer door-to-terminal transport, both Bolt and regular taxis are available directly at the airport. This is a practical choice especially for early morning or late night flights, when local transport and train connections may not run as frequently, or when you’re travelling with bulky luggage and want the certainty that someone will pick you up right in front of the departures hall.

Practical tips to wrap up

Regardless of how you ultimately get to Košice Airport, allow yourself enough time in reserve. We recommend arriving at the airport at least two hours before your scheduled departure. If you’re flying outside the Schengen area, for example to London or Dublin, it’s better to arrive even earlier — this is related to the EES system, which extends check-in and border control times.

Before you travel, also check the current arrivals and departures information on our arrivals and departures page, and if you have any questions about transport, parking or check-in, take a look at our frequently asked questions. With a bit of planning, the journey from Prešov, Michalovce or Humenné to Košice Airport will take up just a fraction of the worry compared to the flight itself.
